4 Tips for Choosing an Accountant for Your Small Business

When it comes time, how do you choose the right person to run the books for your business?

Of course, the number one thing to consider is whether or not you trust the person to run your business finances. The last thing you want is to worry about where your money is going.

Some other things to consider before you choose an accountant...

➤ Do you need a CPA or a bookkeeper?

You don't necessarily need to start by hiring a CPA right away. Someone who isn't certified and can keep track of the books for you might be a good place for you to start. But, if you need someone to help you with tax planning and your returns each year, you'll want to look into hiring a CPA.

➤ Do they have experience with small businesses or online businesses?

There are a lot of great accountants out there, but if they don't understand how small businesses work and how to get the best deductions when it comes to tax time, it can be really confusing. When you're doing your research, be sure to ask what their experience is with small businesses and self-employed taxes.

➤ Ask for recommendations

You probably already have a circle of people in your business sphere who can help give recommendations for CPAs or bookkeepers. In fact, most of my 1:1 clients come from referrals from my friends and clients. Ask around and see who people recommend - and why.

➤ How often will you get reports and feedback on your profit and loss?

It's OK to outsource your business finances, but it's not OK to have a blindspot. When you're interviewing potential CPAs or bookkeepers, be sure to ask how often they'll check-in and if they'll give you feedback and recommendations for how to move your business profit forward over the next year.

If you're ready to hire an accountant for your business this year, I hope this helps you make the decision a little easier for you!
